Here Are 5 HBCU Honor Programs For You Overachievers Out There

These historically black colleges and universities excel through their honors programs.

There are numerous benefits to attending a historically black college or university. The networks created both in school and through alumni associations, top-notch professors, and undeniable school spirit are just a few reasons to attend. HBCUs have always attracted and retained high-achieving African-American students, many of whom participated in these institutions’ honors programs. Here, we highlight HBCUs with honors programs that should be on your radar:

1. Howard University

Howard University offers three honors programs throughout the university, which include the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Business and School of Communications. While each offers a unique curriculum, they all provide students academic advising, mentorship, leadership development and post-graduate support. While up keeping a competitive cumulative grade point average, the students in these programs are highly engaged, inquisitive, and hold various roles on campus.

2. Spelman College

The Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program is interdisciplinary in structure, providing young women with academic rigor alongside the flexibility to work within their respective academic departments. Intellectual leadership is paramount for the young scholars who conduct programs on and beyond campus.

3. Morehouse College

With an emphasis on leadership and social outreach, the Morehouse Honors Program combines empowerment and academic excellence through an assortment of courses (14 of the 16 academic department majors offered). Students have access to national, regional and state honors organizations. The enrolled men can also take honors courses not offered at Morehouse at Spelman or Clark Atlanta University.

4. Fisk University

Academic excellence is a non-negotiable for students enrolled in the W.E.B. Du Bois General University Honors Program. The program emphasizes leadership, academics, communication, service and self-development.

5. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

Academically talented students thrive at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Honors Center. Through mentoring and academic support, internship and career assistance, and study abroad opportunities, students receive a great deal through the Honors Center. The opportunity to present at conferences is an added plus.
