Bishop Walker draws on his musical background as a drum major to deliver a powerful message surrounding these four C’s for leadership: character, competence, cadence and capacity.
When it comes to character, are you free of ulterior motives?
People with high character -- which is not the same as being flawless because none of us is perfect -- come with honest intentions and do what they say they’ll do.
Competence refers to being able to do the work you say you can do. It’s not the same as thinking you can or looking like you can. To achieve greatness, you have to be ready to do great things.
Cadence isn’t only for members in a band. You can adapt this concept to make sure that those you’re leading are keeping pace with you. Set the tempo and allow others to adapt to it. You shouldn’t have to change your cadence to accommodate people without the capacity to keep up.
Leaders with the capacity to lead have what it takes to make the hard decisions as well as the easy ones.
Keeping these four C’s in mind can turn you into the leader you were meant to be.
